DOWN TO THE WIRE ON CAP LIFT

CURRENT STATUS

From all indications, the cap lift is very much alive in budget negotiations in Albany despite pronouncements by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno that the cap lift will be addressed post budget.

The Governor remains deeply committed to lifting the cap in the current budget cycle. We are encouraged by that and will continue to keep up the pressure on state lawmakers to support lifting the cap.

As we approach the April 1st budget deadline, WE URGE ALL CHARTER SCHOOL LEADERS, PARENTS AND SUPPORTERS TO CALL, WRITE OR VISIT THE DISTRICT OFFICES OF YOUR  STATE LAWMAKER.

PROJECT POSTCARD

We thank all those schools that supported PROJECT POSTCARD and enlisted students, parents and staff in the effort to get postcards out to Speaker Silver and state lawmakers. Many school leaders and parent representatives have contacted the Charter Center to confirm the mailing of postcards this month. IF YOU HAVE NOT MAILED YOUR POSTCARDS PLEASE DO SO. TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

LETTER TO LAWMAKERS

Over the next week the Charter Center will work hard to generate positive news stories and editorials about the need to lift the cap and create more high-quality public charter schools for NYC families. A letter signed by 40 influential New Yorkers supporting lifting the cap and addressed to Governor George Pataki, Senate Majority Leader Bruno and Speaker Silver was delivered to all 212 legislators today.

The potential to win on the cap lift is within reach. Now is the time for everyone with a stake in this movement to get involved.

Thank you.

OPERATIONS NEWS

Job Fair Follow-up:

Approximately 300 job seekers attended the two-day Job Fair this past weekend. We appreciate the feedback we received from schools and look forward to making this an annual event.

If you are attempting to contact Job Fair attendees be advised that all candidates who pre-registered for the event already have profiles in Taleo; any walk-ins will have their information posted on the system within the next week.

If you have not yet received training in Taleo please contact Stephanie Lawkins at slawkins@nycchartercenter.org. We will attempt to accommodate your schedule as best as possible. Please be aware that this training is required because Taleo is not just a resume bank, per se. It is a full-fledged candidate management system that is used by Fortune 500 companies and, when fully utilized, can greatly streamline your hiring processes. The training covers everything from system basics to posting job notices, performing advanced application, communicating with candidates, performing candidate research and coordinating staff interactions with applicants.

More importantly, because the Taleo system is a shared resource for all NYC charter schools, training eliminates the potential for errors that can impact the ability of all schools to access information.

Based on feedback from schools that are already using Taleo we have begun to make improvements to the system, particularly in the area of inter-school privacy. We will let you know when any changes have been instituted.

The Job Board is generating significant traffic so please use it as resource for posting job notices even if you want candidates to apply via your own Web site/email address. More than 1,000 candidates have posted resumes or profiles on the system to date.
